Abstract

When exploring new avenues towards a Degrowth-Society cities as centers of consumption and energy usage become the focus of attention. Sustainability and Degrowth are close to each other and mutually dependent. Therefore they need to be considered together as they play an important role in finding answers for relevant questions regarding the future: How can an increasing population live on limited space and with limited resources in a sustainable way? Which mechanisms or elements could support more sustainable pathways? Cities are both, affected by those challenges and suitable places for developing and testing solutions. This paper reflects upon the “ReparaturCafé” in Karlsruhe and its potential as a socioeconomic praxis in order to contribute to Degrowth and its transformative potential in urban areas. It comes to the conclusion that “ReparaturCafés” are able to realize relevant aspects of Degrowth and therefore are well equiped for fostering a transformation to a degrowth-society.
