Exploring technologies through imaginary worlds: At the intersection of science fiction and technology assessment

This introduction explores the convergence between technology assessment (TA) and science fiction (SF) as complementary approaches to technological futures. While TA generates knowledge for decision making based on scientifically grounded, plausible scenarios, SF uses speculation to create dense, internally coherent imaginary worlds and compelling narratives. However, there are overlaps in three areas: (1) Futures exploration: SF functions as narrative technology assessment with a strong focus on cultural change. (2) Expectation management: SF shapes visions of the future and creates feedback loops between fiction and technology development. (3) Cultural reflection: Speculative worlds serve as ciphers for existing grievances such as those related to power, labor, and identity. The contributions to this Special topic illustrate the methodological versatility of the combination of SF and TA and the potential both approaches hold for each other.References
