“Participatory technology assessment and the framing challenge”

This Special topic critically examines how framing influences participatory outcomes, highlighting both the risks of reproducing established viewpoints and the challenges of ensuring inclusive, credible, and scientifically grounded deliberation in complex technological futures. Over recent decades, participatory approaches have expanded across various domains of technology innovation, aiming to align innovation with societal values and support democratic decision-making. While this promises to broaden perspectives and challenge expert dominance, emerging research reveals limitations, including the reinforcement of dominant narratives and the marginalization of dissenting voices. Central to this debate is the concept of framing, which shapes how problems, knowledge, and participants are defined.
