Abstract

The challenges are big: In order to enable a safe and reliable energy supply in Germany and Europe with large shares of renewable energy, differences between supply and demand in the electrical grid have to be balanced as well as critical spatial distances need to be overcome. Beside storages, other diverse options can be used to stabilize supply and demand in the electricity sector. Based on expected challenges and areas of application this contribution discusses the already existing and partly competing options from different systemic perspectives. For this, assessments from technical-economic scenario-analyses are examined. Then, with the help of a framework of the assessment regarding future viability, several options and combinations with production facilities environmental aspects, resource use and societal aspects are analysed.
