First Announcement and Call for Papers

Assessing the Impact of Impact Assessment
Impact Assessment for Informed Decision Making
The Hague, The Netherlands, June 15-22, 2002

IAIA '02: The Environmental Professional's Forum, bringing together environmental decision makers in government and industry, community leaders and professional practitioners.

Major Theme

Henry Ford could provide any color of car, as long as it was black. He made a good product but forgot to listen to the customers. He learned the hard way and now you can get any color you like.

Impact assessment is a good product, too, but if users don't buy it, it's useless. The main theme of IAIA '02, therefore, is not impact assessment itself; it is the impact of impact assessment. How to make decision makers use impact assessment. How to make impact assessment work for decision makers.

The main focus of IAIA '02 is on the needs of IAIA consumers. What do planners, decision makers and managers want of IA, and what do they need? What are the challenges they have and how can we make tools that help them? What should they know to be able to use impact assessment most effectively?

The International Association for Impact Assessment is an interdisciplinary society dedicated to developing international capacity to anticipate, plan and manage the consequences of development. The Association has over 2,500 members in over 100 countries. IAIA seeks to ensure that political, environmental, social and technological dimensions of decisions are understood by those making them.

In The Hague we will create a meeting place in which producers and consumers of impact assessment tools can meet.
